October 21 Lecture:
Art and Extreme Environments: Inhabiting the Extreme

Human beings have expanded their presence to the entire planet and beyond, to environments of which not only they are not native but that they could not live in without their contemporary technologies: Antarctica, Outer Space, the Underwater world. Since the conquest and exploration era, these extreme environments have been permanently inhabited, although by temporary residents.

These spaces have also always been a territory for artists, working in all possible media, with topics spanning from romanticism to the sublime, through countless heroic and epic expedition stories and sagas. It is no wonder that today's artists are involved in the current issues at stake regarding these environments, such as global warming, pollution and climate change, but also in a wider sense, in what it means to inhabit such places and how a space is turned into a place and into home.

Annick Bureaud will argue through a presentation of contemporary creations and artworks that we are currently witnessing an anthropologisation of the extreme and an extremophilisation of humans. The aesthetics and the different modalities of works that are meant both for situation within these environments (and for the people living there) and for more conventional gallery settings will be discussed, as well as the validity of the divide between new media and contemporary art.
October 20 Graduate Seminar:
Leonardo: A Case Study in Art(s), Science(s) and Technologie(s) Publishing

Founded by kinetic artist and space engineer Frank Malina, the first issue of Leonardo was released in 1968 in the form of a (very) academic journal. More than forty years later, the Leonardo imprint now encompasses not only the original printed journal, but also a book series, websites, electronic publications and activities outside the traditional confines of publishing such as the organization of workshops and conferences and the support of artists-in-residence projects.

This seminar will present the original goals and missions of Leonardo, how they evolved together with the evolution of techno-science art, how what were once cutting-edge artworks are now part of art history, and the role of Leonardo in documenting these artworks and advocating for them. Publishing in general and academic publishing in particular are witnessing tremendous changes through the development of many new online platforms and tools. Leonardo is now engaging in a reflection on "next step publishing" that will be discussed with seminar participants.

avec : HONF, IB:SC | Utopies Monétaires Internationales : Paolo Cirio, Mansour Ciss Kanakassy & Baruch Gottlieb, Enric Duran, Christian Nold, Dyndy | Samon Takahashi | Drift : DJ Sniff, Arnaud Rivière, Martin Tétreault, eRikm | WJ-SPOTS | Altlabs meeting | Artisans Numériques | DIY Music : Casper Electronics, Emmanuelle Gibello, Das OS | Mario de Vega | Horia Cosmin Samoila | Art of Failure, Benjamin Cadon, Alejo Duque | Vincent Epplay & Sebastien Roux, Sally Golding, chdh, {eab}
La forêt bleue is a collection of new installation works by Brad Todd merging interactive technology into everyday objects. The exhibition premiers its namesake piece, commissioned to the artist by OBORO: Inspired by the fairylike and anthropomorphic universe of children’s stories, La forêt bleue is a responsive tableau in which the outlines of passersby are given antlers, wings or tails and transposed in a monumental video projection on the three-floor high façade of 4001 Berri. Each finite appearance in the forest is a manifestation of its time spent in the online database, which acts as an exhaustive record of every transient individual.

La forêt bleue will be projected from Monday to Saturday, du crépuscule à l’aube.

-
L'atomisation du temps draws together digital images, videos and installations whose matrix structures are used to visualize spatiotemporal phenomena. Retracing events lasting between one hour and one year, each piece is the result of a painstaking, systematic process in which pixels have individually captured fragments of the successive moments portayed. This act of temporal dislocation generates stratified images which reveal the dangers, rhythms, intensity and transitory moments of a reality in constant flux.

-
Yam Lau’s Rehearsal is a computer-generated animation/digital video composed of a series of images, structures, rhythms, sentiments and experiences that are endearing to him — the pattern of a Chinese lattice, the image of a young woman weeping, the comfort taken in the sound of rain, mirrors, grids and moving shadows, etc. In hindsight, Rehearsal is a condensation of multiple spatial/ temporal frameworks in which distinct elements nest, veil and most importantly anticipate each other. Hence, the work has some structural resemblance to a dream. The cumulative sensation and effect of the elements has a power that is greater than its essentially “inexpressible narrative”.

Planes of light appearing at the verge of seeing and a completely darkened space in which vision, hearing and touch are probed at the thresholds of perception are two of the experiences awaiting viewers in Chris Salter's "Atmosphere," an exhibition bringing together several sensorially-based, room-sized audio-visual-tactile installations. An artist, researcher and professor in the Fine Arts at Concordia whose large scale immersive environment Air XY in collaboration with designer Erik Adigard was commissioned for the curated show in the 2008 Venice architecture Biennale, Salter is interested in the ways in which new technologies amplify and transform the thresholds of human sensation and perception.

Atmosphere is a total sensory environment combining coloured light, sound, infrared heat and haze. Over a 20 minute cycle, sudden bursts of light, sound and heat transform the main FOFA gallery into a synesthetic space fluctuating between dense overload and contemplative reflection. Exploring what architecture critic Mark Wigley calls "an architecture of atmosphere," a sensuous climate of ephemeral yet, tangibly felt effects envelop visitors, probing the ways in which the just perceivable opens up our experience of noise and order, sense and sensation.

Simultaneously, the FOFA Gallery’s Black Box will feature an experimental version of Salter's most recent Just Noticeable Difference (JND) installation which has been touring Europe. JND is a sensory environment for one person at a time lying in total darkness. The installation is based on Gustav Fechner’s concept of the Just Noticeable Difference: the ability to perceptually detect the smallest changes in sensory stimuli. Combining near darkness with extraordinary low levels of vibration, light and sound, visitors enter the pitch dark black box and lie down on a raised, body length surface. Once inside, visitors experience a "composition of touch, light and sound"; an extraordinarily wide range of visual, auditory and tactile sensations that challenge how we perceive the smallest degrees of change in sensory stimuli over different levels of intensities.

Atmosphere explores four conceptual/technological areas of research: cross modal sensory phenomena, perceptual thresholds, questions about the dissolution of self-hood inside sensory reduction environments and ecological concepts of perception. It is funded by SSHRC, CALQ, Concordia and Hexagram.

As part one of a two-part thesis exhibition, Jim Holyoak be generating a 10’9? tall, 115’ long drawing installation inside the York Corridor vitrine of the FOFA Gallery. Within this long, glass hallway, he will be drawing a geological timescape inhabited by endangered, extinct, and imaginary animals. Thinking of himself as an amateur paleoecologist, and of the FOFA vitrine as a large terrarium, Holyoak will volunteer himself as a semi-captive specimen, and grow a paper forest. This indoor forest will be not only a timescape, but also a mindscape - a realm of fact and fantasy, inhabited by monsters and other animals, extinct and endangered, throughout the span of life on Earth. Like a conscientious gardener, Holyoak will tend to the space every day, for one month.

The aim of this exhibition is to blur the perceived lines between human and animal, real and unreal, what exists now and what is gone forever. By treating myself as a specimen, Holyoak hopes to become more aware of his own animal nature, to examine human alienation from the natural world, and to question the commonly taken-for-granted attitude of human supremacy. He hopes also to increase general mindfulness of the fact that we, as homo sapiens, belong to but a single species among multitudes of Earthlings. From this perspective we can better know who we are as humans.
